Bangladesh is undergoing a demographic transition, with a young and growing population. However, the development of skills required in the labour market remains limited, particularly in Kurigram and Thakurgaon districts. These districts, located in northern Rangpur Division, face some of the highest rates of poverty and youth unemployment in the country. Existing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions reach only a small fraction of the youth workforce, and many rely heavily on donor or government funding.
In response, RDRS Bangladesh established the RDRS Technical Training Institute (RTTI) in Nilphamari, designed to be self-sustaining and market-responsive. RTTI aims to reduce the skills gap, lower the number of youths Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET), and increase access to decent livelihoods.
RTTI provides training to unemployed youth in high-demand skills to create self-employment opportunities. The Institute received official approval from the National Skill Development Authority (NSDA), Government of Bangladesh, on May 26, 2024. Currently, RTTI offers courses in five high-demand trades: Electrical Installation, Mobile Phone Servicing, Computer Operation, Tailoring and Refrigeration.
